DATE- On February 26th, the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation sponsored a Community Conversation on the topic of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Last year, the Foundation conducted a survey of its non-profit community partners and asked them what would be most helpful to build their organizational capacity. Among the topics of high interest to the non-profit groups was DEI, and so the Foundation arranged for the Tri Zen Consulting group, based in Philadelphia, to provide the two-hour session. This Community Conversation was one in a series that the Salem Health and Wellness has been conducting as part of its community engagement process. It was held at Appel Farms Arts Camp, an important collaborator with the Foundation.
The session helped the participants understand the implications of how our biases sometimes can get in the way of our decision making, either in the workplace or in personal relationships. Those biases can be overt, but more often come from historical and/or social messages about people who might be different than us. The training also focused on how managers and supervisors in non-profit, for-profit or government organizations can help their employees to understand how their biases might get in the way of doing their best work and offering the highest quality service possible.
Attendees of the DEI Community Conversation were very happy with the training and requested the Foundation continue its support of these forums.
